In class today we welcomed a visit from Portland artist, writer, and poet Lisa Radon. She came specifically to talk about research. Among many new references and reading recommendations she also shared her interest in creating art from research.

Typically an artist is researching, filtering, and processing topics of interest to create an object (painting, performance, video, etc). Lisa is curious about the notion of the artist exhibiting the material that would lead to the object, making the research the final piece instead of a painting.

This led me back to my brush and india ink to letter these lists of influences. Some of these are old and some are new. Currently they’re being “exhibited” in my studio and servering as inspiration, however I do have plans to make a zine documenting and connecting me to these sources.
